PSONEN

Found seasonally in the northeast region of the continent, this species is one that scholars of the fae, in partnership with Abenaki medicine keepers, have been watching particularly closely for the past decade, due to the suspected impact of climate change on the psonen’s behaviors and habitats.

Psonen are eagle-sized birds that can, with a beat of their wings, cause snowstorms and icy winds, both as a method of self-defense against predators and as a side effect of increased flight during their mating season (late December through February). While for several years it was feared that climate change would cause severe damage to the psonen’s population numbers, scholars are recently noticing an interesting trend—the frequency of severe winter weather events, such as polar vortices in the Northeast, has coincided with a rise in the population numbers, not a decrease. Psonen were once documented to mate roughly once every five to seven years, but it is now suspected that higher summer temperatures are causing the psonen to reproduce more frequently—even as regularly as annually, though this data has yet to be conclusively confirmed. Though this may at first seem like a good thing, it raises a new concern: overcrowding of the psonen’s habitats. As with any imbalance of population numbers, this will certainly cause cascading effects through the rest of the food chain, but the more immediate worry is that of their effect on the weather. Larger and larger mating flights of hundreds or even thousands of psonen could bring about a truly cataclysmic winter storm. Unfortunately, due to the public’s general apathy toward issues of climate change and the general misconception that creatures like the psonen do not exist, there is neither enough funding nor personnel to launch any kind of system that would endeavor to bring the population back under control.
